Many people think that property on Lanai is all owned by one person. That is not the case. Historically the Plantation sold homes in the city to their workers. Those homes have passed down through families or through sales and now the majority of homes in town are owned by private individuals. Homes in town range in age from 70 years to only 3 or 4 years old. Most homes in the city are modest and are located on fairly small lots. A 6,000 sq ft lot is considered large by city standards. However, sale prices now range in the $700,000 to $900,000s for these modest homes.

The availability of rental homes is very scarce on the island. Lanai Resorts LLC, the main owner of the island handles many of the rentals, but they are mostly for their own employees or the resort employees. The local school handles some rentals for their teachers only. Okamoto Realty handles about a dozen private rental homes, but they are usually fully rented. Okamoto Realty does not handle any short term rentals.
